If you are considering getting a TN DTC shipping license, wait until after December 28, 2022.

Earlier this year, the TN ABC started enforcing an overlooked rule requiring DTC shippers to register with the TN Secretary of State to obtain a new TN DTC license or renew an existing license. The fees and business tax associated with Secretary of State registration persuaded many wineries forego shipping to TN rather than comply. 

The good folks at the CA Wine Institute have been working with the TN ABC on this issue and the TN ABC has now amended the direct shipping rules to remove the requirement of Secretary of State registration. The amendment will become effective on December 28, 2022. 

Until the rule change is effective, applicants for new DTC licenses and existing licensees going through the renewal process are required to comply with the TN Secretary of State registration in order for their application to be processed.
