A Survey of the Key Drivers of a Wine Business

Intermediate Wine Business Management course | March 7 - May 2, '24

This 8-week course, taught by our greatly appreciated instructor David Bower, offers a comprehensive exploration of key aspects in the modern wine industry, emphasizing current practices and future opportunities. Students delve into vital areas such as regulations, production, distribution, sales, and marketing, gaining insights from operational wineries. The course culminates in a SWOT project, where students apply their knowledge to analyze a wine business/brand.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand viticulture, enology, production, marketing, distribution, and sales.
  • Evaluate alternative approaches and associated costs.
  • Assess the contribution of component areas to the value of a wine product.
  • Expand knowledge of distribution and regulatory issues, including the international wine market.
  • Identify opportunities and threats to a wine business in the internal environment.
  • Evaluate and draft a plan for market entry using a SWOT analysis.
  • Plan for future wine markets and alternative channels of commerce.

Sign up for our third Winery Compliance Workshop

This course provides participants with an overview of the history of alcoholic beverage law and regulation, focusing on direct to consumer and wholesale licensing for a California winery.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the interconnected licenses and permits required to fulfill direct to consumer and wholesale wine sales outside the state of California, including evaluating the cost of obtaining and maintaining licenses and related reporting requirements.
 
Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify different types of licensing requirements for a California winery to sell wine outside of California.
  2. Understand the metrics needed to evaluate the costs and determine what licensing footprint is best for your winery.
  3. Understand the different reporting requirements related selling wine outside of California.
  4. Understand that there are multiple ways to stay in compliance with out of state licensing and reporting requirements.
